The Discover Small Town America Tour is planning to include a number of historic small towns on its itinerary. For example, one of the first stops we’ll be making is Harpers Ferry, WV (population 291). According to Wikipedia, “the town is situated at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers where the U.S. states of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia meet. In 1783, Thomas Jefferson visited Harpers Ferry and called the site perhaps one of the most stupendous scenes in nature. It is also where, on October 16, 1859, the abolitionist John Brown led a group of 21 men in a raid on a munitions arsenal. Brown attacked and captured several buildings; he hoped to use the captured weapons to initiate a slave uprising throughout the South. The raid was a catalyst for the Civil War.”
While iconic places like Harpers Ferry are of great interest, we’re also excited about spotlighting other, even infamous or not-so-well-known, small towns.
